Background: This research is to assess the information about stroke in health-related sites on the Korean internet.
Methods: We searched the internet with the words ¡¯Noe-Jol-Joong¡¯ and ¡¯Joong-Poong¡¯ on the 4 most popular Korean internet search engines. A total of 240 sites that rank in the top 30 in each engine which contain information about cerebral vascular accident (CVA) were analyzed for information about symptoms, risk factors, treatment and rehabilitation.
Results: Our subjects were total of 78 web-sites excluding those that were without information about CVA or overlapping. The most commonly mentioned risk factor was hypertension (72 times) and the most common symptom is paralysis (71 times). The number of risk factors were 5.4¡¾2.3 and the symptoms 4.9¡¾1.4. Sites advocating rapid hospital visit after symptom detection was 38 and those with rehabilitation were only 21. Sites run by doctors contained more symptoms and risk factors and hospital visit exhortations (P£¼0.05) compared to oriental doctors but there was no difference in rehabilitation information (P£¾0.05).
Conclusion: Web-sites usually placed importance on risk factors and symptoms but were weak in treatment and rehabilitation. But information content and quality differed by occupation.
